Eilat Bid For European Club Cup 2012
Eilat 2012 – Applicant City

The Israel Chess Federation is formally submitting its proposal to hold the European Club Cup 2012 in the beautiful resort city of Eilat.

Israel has a large, vibrant chess community: approximately 3,000 chess players are active in tournaments, while 15,000 young people study chess within the school framework, and 3,000 more play chess in a wide variety of clubs and cultural centers.

Israel also has a significant presence in international chess tournaments, with 34 grandmasters and 24 international masters. The Israeli team has won silver medals in the European Championship as well as the World Olympiad, regularly placing in the top five, with leading players such as Boris Gelfand, Emil Sutovsky, Ilia Smirin, Boris Avrukh, Maxim Rodshtein, Victor Mikhalevski, and many more.

The Israel Chess Federation has extensive experience of organizing international tournaments, including the World Team Championship, World Blitz Championship, Olympiad, Maccabiah Games, international festivals, and more.

We are confident that the ECU board will reach the right decision and select the city of Eilat to host the European Club Cup in 2012.

Why Eilat?

The city of Eilat on the shores of the Red Sea was the Israel Chess Federation's natural selection to host the European Club Cup.

Eilat has an excellent central location in the Middle East between Taba in Egypt and the Jordanian city of Aqaba. Compared with similar tourist resorts in Australia and Central America, Eilat is located within a conveniently short distance of Europe's major cities, making it an attractive option for European tourists. It is also a "free trade zone" exempt from VAT and other taxes, making it a popular destination for international tourists.

The other reasons for Eilat's popularity are clear: the excellent weather, gorgeous beaches, and the aquamarine waters of the Red Sea, featuring a stunning natural coral reef. The climate is comfortable, even during the winter (28-30°C in October), and the landscape is a unique meeting point between desert dunes and mountainous slopes.

The city features amusement sites suitable for all the family, including the Kings City "biblical theme park", the Submarine Observatory, and an IMAX cinema. Since 1987,

Eilat has hosted the prestigious annual Red Sea Jazz Festival, which attracts visitors from throughout Israel and around the globe.

Hospitality

Eilat features no less than 48 hotels, offering guests a total of 12,000 rooms. For guests of the European Club Cup, 4 excellent hotels (of different price ranges) are available within 5 minutes' walk of the tournament hall, located in the Isrotel Royal Beach Hotel.

Towering over the Eilat skyline, with spectacular views of the Red Sea, the Isrotel Royal Beach redefines the concept of "prestige". This 7-star deluxe hotel is the leading light of the Isrotel chain, and the finest hotel in the city.

The Isrotel Royal Beach is more than a hotel – it is a way of life. Every detail, from the pampering beds to the Israeli art decorating its walls, is treated with attention and care, ensuring the complete enjoyment of each guest. From the moment you step into the magnificent lobby until the inevitable moment of departure, the Isrotel Royal Beach is an experience that will never be forgotten.

King Solomon Hotel
(5 stars) – Most of the delegates will be lodged here.

The one-word slogan of the Isrotel King Solomon speaks volumes: "Pleasure". You are invited to a vibrant leisure experience where perfect pleasure is guaranteed!

As the first luxury hotel to be opened in Eilat, the Isrotel King Solomon changed the vacation habits of Israelis and put Eilat firmly on the world tourism map. The hotel has recently been renovated, so the rooms and public areas look wonderfully vibrant and new.

For delegations with limited budgets, we suggest the Isrotel Royal Garden and the Isrotel Lagoona:

Excursions in Eilat and the Surrounding Area

Petra

(Images taken from www.caminandosinrumbo.com.)

Petra is an ancient Nabataean city famous for its intricately-designed tombs, which were carved out from the sandstone of the Edom Mountains. The name Petra is derived from the Greek "petrus", meaning "rock", and it is also called "the pink city" due to the unique color of the sandstone. Petra is located in the south of Jordan, about 100 km north of Eilat.

Santa Caterina Monastery – Mountain Climbing & Tour
The Santa Caterina Monastery has always been one of Christianity's most secret and isolated locations, where the Catholic Church concealed the writings and discoveries it did not wish to be revealed to the world. The monastery library's significance to the Christian world is therefore second only to the Vatican library itself.

A guide will lead you within the walls of the monastery while giving detailed explanations about its history, including the churches from the 4th and 6th centuries, the rock of Moses, the burning bush, and the skulls of the priests.

Dolphin Reef – Diving Site
Eilat's Dolphin Reef is a truly unique ecological site. Along a charming shoreline, you may be lucky enough to meet a group of bottlenose dolphins, who hunt, play, and court in the waters around the reef. The fact that the dolphins choose of their own free will to enjoy human company, or to continue their daily routine, strengthens the genuine nature of the relationship, say the managers of the site, who have strictly followed these principles since the Dolphin Reef was founded in the late 1980s.
