CURACAO OPEN BLITZ TOURNAMENT

Yona Kosashvili vs. Sofia Polgar  / Behind is Viktor Korchnoi battling for the 3rd place

International Grandmaster Yona Kosashvili (Israel) became the winner of the Curaçao Open Blitz tournament. This Blitz tournament (5 minutes per game per player) was an appetizer for the Curaçao 1962- 2002 tournament that will start at Monday November 18. This tournament is dedicated to the 1962 Candidate tournament. The 1962 key persons Viktor Kortsnoj, Pal Benkö and Yuri Averbakh have arrived on Curaçao already, while some other strong grandmasters will arrive during the weekend.

The tournament started with a Round Robin in groups where the best 8 players would qualify for the finals with KO system. Until the semi- finals the competition went more or less as it was expected, but in the semi- finals Sofia Polgar blocked the way for Viktor Kortsnoj (1.5-0.5). In the meantime her husband Yona Kosashvili won with the same numbers from Gert Ligterink (Netherlands). The final became a family affair, where the married couple had to fight each other. After 2 games the score was 1-1. Yona Kosashvili won the final shoot- out game (white 5 minutes, black 4 minutes, blacks wins in case of a draw).
