1st Saturday Chess Tournaments
Budapest, HUNGARY

(Pablo Sierra, Chessville News Section Editor)

November 2nd / 1st Round

Some months ago I was invited to Budapest by Mr. Laszlo Nagy, International Chess Organizer. He wanted me to visit his 1st Saturday Tournaments and I agreed to his generous offer and got ready to fly to Budapest in early November 2002.

On the 2nd of November I arrived at the Hungarian Chess Federation, some minutes before all the players arrived at the playing hall. Mr. Nagy greeted me at the main door of the Chess Federation. He's a tall person who speaks English perfectly, also German, Russian & Hungarian!

Mr. Nagy has been organizing these 1st Saturday Chess Tournaments since 1991 and I can say he has met some well known players, including GM Peter Leko (who fulfilled some of his GM norms in Mr. Nagy's tournaments) and FIDE World Chess Champion Ruslan Ponomariov (who hasn't played here but has stayed at Mr. Nagy´s home).

After having some words with Mr. Nagy I walk into the playing hall. There's still time before all the players arrive so I can walk through the tables taking a look at the boards, pieces and clocks; everything is ready but some of the players are still signing in for the tournament.

While Im sitting there, a young woman walks into the playing hall.  She's WIM Adina Bogza from Romania (2270 ELO). Mr. Nagy approaches her and introduces her to me. As he tells me, Mrs. Bogza also studies Chemistry in Bucharest (Romania) and she is going to be the only woman taking part in the tournament. Mr. Nagy asks me to take a picture of her but she's too shy and tells me to take pictures of her during her games.

A few minutes later, a young boy approaches the playing hall and sits near to us. He has no problem starting a conversation with Mrs. Bogza but Mr. Nagy appears and tells him about my presence in the tournament. He looks puzzled to me, he seems to be thinking: a chess journalist? This young guy?  He's Etan Ilfeld from Israel (2176 ELO) and I must say he looked full of energy and everything about him were laughs and good manners.

I also have the chance to meet the Dembo family; they are the parents of WGM Yelena Dembo, who at the moment was playing with the Hungarian Team at the 35th Chess Olympiad at Bled (Slovenia). Her current ELO is 2375, but she's improving a lot. I would know many more things about them in the following day...

As I look to my back I find Mr. Nagy talking to Ivo Timmermans from the Netherlands but I don't have time to talk to him, the drawing of lots is now starting, the November 1st Saturday Tournaments are about to start!

Mr. Nagy starts greeting all the participants, then he helps the International Chess Arbiter with the drawing of lots. He starts with the GM section, then the IM and FM sections. When the drawing of lots is over, the Arbiter explains to all the participants the basic rules of this tournament, such as the time control, etc..  When he finishes, the tournament starts :-)
