Smart Chess
- a toolset for the
device-empowered
chess generation

by Andres Hortillosa

Computers have changed pretty much every facet of human life.  Instead of writing letters with pen and paper, we send emails or instant messages.  Instead of using standard phones for calls, we use Skype because sometimes we want to not just hear voices, but see faces too.

We no longer dial the numbers.  We simply speak the name or click a mouse, and the call is placed to the right person.  Best of all, we hardly get wrong numbers or party lines, like in the days of yore.

Computers have also changed the way we teach at schools and by extension the way we acquire and consume knowledge.  Even in the world of chess, today’s top young players rely heavily on computers both in study and in training.  It is an easy transition for this group of players who grow up with computers in the Internet era.

For them, it is a simple matter of harnessing the efficiencies that this tool provides.

Two things that make computers and similar devices, like smart phones, the perfect tool for the 21st century players, are the staggering computational power of today’s processors (even for smart phones) and the instantaneous access to chess knowledge via the Internet infrastructure.

New ideas played in the last hour, anywhere in the world, incessantly stream to this class of device-empowered chess players, which are then subjected to careful study either for emulation or refutation.  For many of these players, the tool has become an evolved appendage of consciousness finely tuned to acquire and consume new knowledge.

As device-averse players continue to ignore the usefulness of these tools, the gap in knowledge between them and the device-empowered players only widens guaranteeing an assailable advantage for the latter.  The great Kasparov is known for his masterful harnessing of the computer’s power in his long reign at the top.

His contemporaries were slow in following his lead.

As a consequence, his challengers often suffered defeat in his hands mostly on the strength of preparation.  The younger players, however, need very little persuasion as computers already permeate their daily activities.  They were born in the right era where computers and Internet connectivity are as common as the air.

Harnessing the power of the mighty processor, we bring to every chess player a more efficient way of acquiring and consuming chess knowledge.  The powerful combination of a handy device like the iPhone or any smart phone, which uses touch-screen technology and 3G (or faster connectivity) is sure to change the way we acquire and consume chess knowledge.

When the tool reaches the hands of the masses, the game of chess will witness a paradigm shift in the way we learn its secrets but more so in the way we play it.

We take seriously the challenge to become a major contributor of learning tools and learning resources as the paradigm shift takes form.

Our Smart Chess family of interactive knowledge pieces is best consumed in devices like the iPhone and iPad.  Subsequently, a similar version will be released for the desktop in Windows and Mac platforms.

It is our mission with Smart Chess to revolutionize your game.

We believe our Smart Chess platform and portfolio of products are what players need to improve their chessplaying skills in the most efficient yet economical way – the smart way.  We are pleased to offer you a family of interactive learning and training resources from the armory of imaginative published authors and column writers.  Our editorial staff is comprised of players (Experts, Masters, International Masters, and Grandmasters) who not only love playing our royal game, but even more so love teaching its deeper secrets.

Why are books in Smart Chess format different?

Can you imagine reading your favorite chess book in a form where you get to see an interactive chess board in place of a diagram?  How will the tool impact and deepen your learning experience?  We are convinced it will revolutionize your game!  Our application will allow you to replay the moves leading to every position of concern even right from the opening.

We believe something of value is taken away from the reader’s experience when a chess concept is explained from a given position without providing the ability to see how the position came to be.

Our application will supply back what was taken away.

We believe there is merit in knowing how the pre-conditions of a chess concept came to be, and that to be just as equally important, as the understanding of the concept itself.

In addition, nested variations and fantasy lines are easily followed to their respective conclusions without being so far removed from the main game.  Every nested line, with its corresponding notes, is presented as an interactive board while remaining a click away back to the main game.

We are never constrained by space so our writers can go as deep and wide to their hearts’ content.  The end result can only be to your benefit.  Authors are no longer limited to game fragments as length of material is never an issue in our format.

Our openings series will include hundreds of complete games played featuring the opening being discussed as a bonus.  We see our platform not as a competing but as a complementing channel for traditional book publishers.

We are, therefore, seeking licensing agreements with mainstream publishers to release their popular titles in our Smart Chess format for smart phones and other touch-screen enabled devices.

Why are lessons in Smart Chess format different?

Our lessons, as with our books, can lay claim to the same differentiating benefits as described above.  The reading experience is much richer.  Chess moves do not appear as a string of unrelated events, but as an intelligent flow of ideas.

When you get to a critical chess motif in a lesson, our application has a feature (if enabled) that will alert you to the existence of parallel lessons discussing the same motif found in your library.  If the related lessons are not in your library, the application will prompt you to the possibility of purchasing them at the Apple store or through our website.

Why are Games Collections in Smart Chess format different?

Our games collections series are packaged in manageable sizes by categories such as by players or by events.  If you simply want to follow the round by round games of a historic event like Zurich 1953, it is literally a few screen taps away.

If you want to know what Topalov or Anand or Kasparov plays against 1…c5 as White, it is available as a collection.  Another curiosity might be to see the games of Topalov as White or Black.  Playing over the games in the said collection is a matter of loading the collection.

Why are Puzzles Packs in Smart Chess format different?

Our Puzzle Packs are drawn from games played in 2010 and thereafter.  Our application allows us to shorten the lag between the time a game is played and the time it is used as a puzzle exercise for tactics training.  Traditional puzzle books copy from other books and they tend to use the same examples over and over.

Every puzzle pack in our series has different source games.

We are releasing a puzzle pack every month drawn from games played the prior month.  No more carrying large and dated puzzle books to tournaments with our Puzzle Pack.  You will never see duplicates in our puzzle collections.

In summary, we are changing the way chess knowledge is delivered, acquired and consumed.

Company

We are the new player on the block.  Thank you for checking us out.  We showed up not to compete but to innovate.

Adversity and opportunity both got us here.  The proliferation of smart phones and the noticeable growing popularity of the iPad provided us the opportunity.  Adversity came in the form of a deteriorating vision which hinders the satisfying enjoyment of reading printed material.  Both led us to create Smart Chess that we now proudly share to all avid chess players everywhere.

Our vision guides our direction and inspires our creative deliberations.

The features and functions we encapsulated into Smart Chess are designed to give the knowledge-consumer a full learning experience as he plunges his mind in the nourishing depths of chess literature.

We want to simplify the consumption of chess content by harnessing the capability of touch-screen technology and the portability of these devices.  As you know, it is not always convenient to set up a chess board as a companion tool when reading a chess book anywhere.  Besides, books and chess boards are too burdensome to lug around.

Publishers have made the task of following the author’s mind a bit less daunting by creating books with plenty of diagrams.  It is a commendable effort, but the overall experience is still limiting.  Diagrams provide some utility to the reader yet they tend to clutter the pages and add cost to the price.

Traditional books will continue to have its hallowed place in our hearts.

However, we believe so much is left out in terms of undiscovered knowledge because for many – the mere following of multiple variations and their nested lines – are obstacles to clear comprehension of the material.

Smart Chess is a pioneering answer that utilizes our strong preference for learning with pictures.  The ability to go in and out of nested lines in one screen tap promotes efficiency and speed in our acquisition of new chess knowledge.

We like to think that with Smart Chess – Dvoretsky is yet to be fully-revealed.  We invite you to enjoy your favorite books in a new experience – the Smart Chess way.

It is our passion to bring every book to you in Smart Chess.
