Jude Acers
(Read: Acers Remembers - La Carratera)

Joseph Grenner Ier III
Age 9, Third Grade

1st Prize - Winning entry in the non-fiction writing category for St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana

”I like to play chess.  Last year when I wasn’t as good as I am right now, I went to the French Quarter with my dad.  We found a chess champion named Jude Acers, and we asked if I could play him.  He said, “OK, but you have to pay $5.”

I started to play, and I lost in three moves.  I was stunned.  I was surprised because I’d never met someone like him before.  He told me my mistakes and taught me a new move, the Castle.  After we went home, my dad asked us if we wanted to meet a very good 17 year old chess player named Drew.  I said, “sure.”  He became my chess coach, and that’s how I learned to play chess.

Our thanks to Russell Miller for these pictures, which were taken by Lynn Irby of Metairie, Louisiana.
Read about Jude's newest book, The Italian Gambit.
