The Kennedy Kids Mary Elizabeth & Jon
Double Double Trouble Trouble “I’m bored” I said one cloudy afternoon. “I’m bored” said my little brother, Jon. “You, too?” I asked. “You, too?” he asked back at me. “Are you copying me?” I asked with a frown. “Are you copying me?” he said with a grin. “Stop that!” “Stop that!” It was no good getting angry. I had an idea. “Do you want to play chess?” I asked. “Do you want to play chess?” Jon replied. I skipped down the hall, past Mom, who smiled. My brother followed. I got down the chessboard and said “Good luck!” “Good luck” squeaked my brother, who usually never says that to me. I took the white pieces, and started with:
...I realized he was copying me again! I thought hard. Maybe I could put my Knights back, then take them out again, then put them back again – and if Jon followed me, I could claim a draw by repetition? I thought some more. I had something better than that! The game continued in mirror-fashion:
I looked up crossly, and my brother got the giggles. I played my moves faster and faster, and he followed along.
“Well, well, well!” I said. “Well, well, well?” he replied.
It was a check – he couldn’t copy that. He had to find something else.
“Good game,” I said, putting away the pieces.
“Good game,”
he muttered, and ran off to climb a tree or something. Index of Fiction at Chessville
