The Kennedy Kids
Mary Elizabeth & Jon

Double Double Trouble Trouble
by Mary Elizabeth, as retold by
Rick Kennedy

“I’m bored” I said one cloudy afternoon.

“I’m bored” said my little brother, Jon.

“You, too?” I asked.

“You, too?” he asked back at me.

“Are you copying me?” I asked with a frown.

“Are you copying me?” he said with a grin.

“Stop that!”

“Stop that!”

It was no good getting angry. I had an idea.

“Do you want to play chess?” I asked.

“Do you want to play chess?” Jon replied.

I skipped down the hall, past Mom, who smiled. My brother followed.  I got down the chessboard and said “Good luck!”  “Good luck” squeaked my brother, who usually never says that to me.

I took the white pieces, and started with:

1.e4.  He, of course, played 1….e5.  After 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nc3 Nc6...

...I realized he was copying me again!  I thought hard.  Maybe I could put my Knights back, then take them out again, then put them back again – and if Jon followed me, I could claim a draw by repetition?  I thought some more.  I had something better than that!

The game continued in mirror-fashion:

4.Bb5 Bb4 5.0-0 0-0 6.d3 d6 7.Bg5 Bg4.

I looked up crossly, and my brother got the giggles.  I played my moves faster and faster, and he followed along.

8.Nd5 Nd4 9.Bc4 Bc5 10.Qd2 Qd7

“Well, well, well!” I said.

“Well, well, well?” he replied.

11.Bxf6 Bxf3 12.Ne7+

It was a check – he couldn’t copy that.  He had to find something else.

12…Kh8 13.Bxg7+ Kxg7 14.Qg5+ Kh8 15.Qf6+ mate.

“Good game,” I said, putting away the pieces.

“Good game,” he muttered, and ran off to climb a tree or something.
