* - Kasparov became FIDE champ in 1985 and held it until 1993, when he broke from FIDE and started the rival PCA (becoming their champ). Between 1993 and 2006 FIDE and PCA both claimed world champions. Kramnik defeated Kasparov in 2000. In 2006 Kramnik played and defeated Topalov (FIDE champion), unifying the chess world championship.
