An Introduction to
Chessville's New Home Page

We are excited to bring you the first major change to Chessville's appearance since our inception, back in 2002.  Below are some of the changes we've made, changes we hope will make it easier to find what you're looking for, and maybe even something you weren't!  We're not finished either; next up is a complete redesign of the home page, which will still retain the new elements we're introducing to you today, but in a much cleaner, more appealing looking format.  Our old home page is still available, though we won't be maintaining it.

Here's the top portion of our new home page (without the accompanying header or side columns):

The first thing you'll notice are the five icons spread across the top of the page.  These link to hopefully obvious pages or sections on the home page, but one is brand new to Chessville, and deserves a closer look.

Recently we completed work on a series of pages gathering together links to related content here at Chessville, like our tactics page, that contains links to our Problem of the Week, Chessprint, and so forth.  We think of them as neighborhoods, and at the left is the icon near the top of our home page that you can click on to get to the neighborhood listings.  Here's what the top-tier looks like on our home page:

Chess Openings
Scholastic Resources Chessville Mall

Some of these pages contain links to other pages of related content, and some columns might be listed in more than one neighborhood.  For example, the Opening Resources page includes a link to the Unorthodox
Chess Openings
page, where you'll also find a link to The Search for Dragons & Mythical Chess Openings which is also linked to from the Opening Resources page.  Sound confusing?  It's not, we just tried to build in a degree of redundancy in how and where things were listed, so hopefully it will be listed where you think it ought to be!

Next I want to draw your attention to Pablo's Chess News, where Chessville's intrepid News Editor, Pablo Sierra, keeps you up to date on the latest mega-tournaments, matches, and other chess events.  The newspaper icon to the left is the obvious link to this section.  Also in Pablo's News section you'll find links to other Chessville news sources, including Alekhine's Parrot and .Les Echecs des Femmes.  Here's what a small portion of Pablo's news section looks like:

Also along the top of our new home page you'll find a link [Notice the icon to the left?] to a portion of the home page where we list the most recently half-dozen chess book (CD, DVD, eBook, etc.) reviews.  This section sits to the left of our list of featured columnists, discussed more fully below, and it looks like this:

New material will always be found right at the top of the page, just below the five-icon area we've just been exploring:

Note that if you click on the words "Latest Headlines" you'll be taken to our traditional Headlines page, which contains brief descriptions of each new item posted.  Here is the link to the headlines page for Apr-Jun 2008.  Or, scroll down to read the entire listing of headlines only, one by one.

We still provide a Problem of the Week and a Chessprint each week, and you can get to them quickly by clicking the link circled in red below:

A new feature for our home page is our listing of columnists, which runs vertically just to the right of the Latest Headlines section:

Here you'll find not only a listing of all currently active Chessville columnists, but links to both their index page and their latest column as well!  In the example above, you can click on "Tigerchess" to visit GM Davies' index page here at Chessville, or click on "Study Your Games" to read his latest column, published on May 4, 2008.  Scroll down the page to see the complete list of columnists - an easy way to find all your favorites and their latest contributions to Chessville!

Last, but not least (we hope!), at the bottom of the page, just above the page footer, is the familiar box of links to our archived headline pages, as well as links to some important administrative pages.  Here's what it looks like:

We made these changes with you in mind, and we hope you'll take a look around and then let us know what you think!  If you get lost, our old home page is still available, though we won't be maintaining it.

Enough already!  Take me to the new
Chessville Home Page!
