Rules

Stalemate

If either player on the move has no legal move, but their king is not in check, then the situation is called “stalemate.”  A stalemate is an immediate draw.  Observe the following diagrams (all of which are "Black to Move"), each with a caption indicating whether or not the current position is stalemate, and why or why not:








Stalemate.
(Black is not in check, but has no legal move.)









Not stalemate.
(Black can move the pawn.)









Stalemate.
(Black is not in check, but has no legal move.)









Not stalemate.
(Black can move the knight.)









Stalemate.
(Black cannot move the knight without exposing the black king to check from the white rook.)
