A Chess Quiz For Chessville Readers

Created by

A new quiz on the
1st of every month!

Jim Mitch, Ph.D.
aka Prof. Chester Nuhmentz

Jim Mitch (aka Professor Chester Nuhmentz) brings Chessville readers an exclusive chess quiz.  Intending to entertain and instruct, these quizzes are aimed at the stronger club & tournament players out there.  Enjoy!

Tips for Taking the Quiz:

  • Click the START button (above) whenever you're ready to begin the quiz.

  • The quiz consists of 20 problems. Each is worth 10 points. The level of difficulty varies so that many players will find some items easy and others quite difficult.

  • Each problem has directions for how to mark your answer. Sometimes you'll click on a chess diagram. For other problems you'll type in chess notation, or click a checkbox. After marking your answer, you will always press the button labeled "Click Here To Submit Your Answer" to continue.

  • Feedback is provided after every item. Information about your progress will also appear below each problem, and you will be shown a results summary upon completing the quiz.

More Chess Training from Prof. Chester Nuhmentz:

Prof. Chester Nuhmentz also provides two great chess exercises for Chessville readers each month:

ChessVision:  In this exercise, players try to imagine up to 10 moves being made from a starting diagram, with the goal of finding all the legal captures and checks that could be made in the envisioned position.

Recon64: Move Prediction Exercise:  Similar to Predict-A-Move and Solitaire-type chess exercises, Recon64 challenges players to find candidate moves from games played by masters.  Players are encouraged to search for several strong candidate moves in each position, and are rewarded as long as their list of moves includes the move selected by the master during the game.  As an extra twist, players invest Recon64 dollars on candidate moves based on how likely they think each move was used in the original game.
