Attempting to deflect the h1-rook from it's defense of the threatened
mate on h2.

Spite-check!
2...Kf5

No better is 2...Kh5 3.Rcc1 etc., as in the main line; or
if 2...Nf6 3.Bxf6+ Kf5 (Or 3...Kh5 works out for White the same way.)
4.Rcc1 etc., as in the main line.
In the diagrammed
position White cannot stop the threatened mate on either h1 or h2,
depending on what White actually plays. The rook on h1 is overworked
- it is both protecting the h2-square against checkmate, but also
protecting the 1st rank, and that includes h1. Just like Man, the
rook can not serve two masters.
3.Rcc1
Merely delays the inevitable by a move.
3...Rxc1

And next is mate on either h1 or h2, again - depending on what White
does. What White can NOT do is protect against both threatened mates
at the same time.
