Can Black safely recapture the rook?  No, Black's best is the mild-mannered 1...Rf7, remaining a piece down, with a lost game.

Here's what happens if Black recaptures the rook:

1...Qxd6








The exchange sacrifice attracts the black queen right where White wants her.  Here comes the fireworks!

2.Bxg7+ Kg8 3.c5+








Discovered check!  And the way to make him pay is to threaten another piece with the piece that moves to "uncover" the check - in this case the pawn.

Here the queen can only interpose to avoid check, with 3...Qd5, after which her royal highness bites the dust.
