At first glance, White would seem to be doing very well - a passed pawn on the 6th rank and supported by a rook ain't nuthin' as my pappy used to say.  But appearances can be deceiving, as Black is about to demonstrate.

1...Nxh3 2.Rf1

Of course the knight is untouchable as White gets mated after 2.gxh3 Rxh3 mate.

Nor would 2.Re1 help: 2...Nf2+ 3.Kg1 Rh1 also mates, as in the main line below.

2...Nf2+

Deadly double-check!

A very attractive mating position is achieved by 2...Nf4+ 3.Kg1 Rxg2 mate

Analysis Diagram: after 3...Rxg2 mate

Back to our game, however, and another extremely attractive final position:

3.Kg1 Rh1#
