Black had no choice, he had no other move.  Lines beginning with moves like 1.Rh8+ are easy to calculate, because the opponent's reply is forced.  White has attracted the black king to an open file, where the white queen can continue forcing black's reply, leading straight to mate!

2.Qh4+ Kg8 3.Qh7 mate
