a porous kingside. At first glance, everything seems to be going
White's way. Black has one resource available to upset the
balance:
1...h6 2.Bh4
2.Be3 looks safer, except for 2...f4 and the bishop
has nowhere to go.
2...g5

Since White must lose a piece anyway (3.Bg3 f4 is the
old Noah's Ark Trap) she decides to get the most value for it.
It's good to keep a cool head when things aren't going your way, and -
like White - get the most you can for your lost material.

Black does have a material advantage - an extra knight
in exchange for White's two extra pawns. But those pawns are
connected, and one of them is an outside passed pawn, potentially very
strong for White.
Black seems to have caught up some in the development
race too, though she still has some problems developing her queenside,
and that light-squared bishop really sucks, trapped behind it's own
pawns as it is.
Still, this is Black's best chance from the original
diagram, affording her the greatest opportunity to trip up her
opponent. Sometimes the best you can do is, well - the best you
can do. :-)
