White to move and draw

[need a hint?]     [Solution]     [archive]

White has been attacking, but the attack seems to have run out of steam.  It looks like White is going to lose material.  Instead, White sacrifices his rook to block the black king's only escape square, h5, with his (Black's) own pawn!

1.Rh5+ gxh5

If instead 1...Kxh5, hoping to rely on the rook & the bishop to hold off the white queen, Black gets a rude awakening with 2.Qxg7 Rxf2 3.Qe5+ Kg4 4.Qxe3+.  The queen just keeps sucking up material, just like a Hoover!

2.Qd6+

Black only has one way to get out of check (other than the suicidal 2...Qf6!) and that's to interpose the queen by...

2...Qg6  ½-½

Now White can just see-saw back and forth, checking first on f8 and then on d6.  All Black can do is shuttle his own queen back and forth from g6 to g7 fending off the checks.  A hopeless task, and White has snatched a half-point from the jaws of defeat.
