Opening School
The Smith-Morra Gambit
by KrzymowskiProduction

The folks from ChessTV have placed their 4-part series on the famous Smith-Morra Gambit onto YouTube.  We've put them all together on this page, so you can learn the basics, and then some, about this fascinating opening.

ChessTV (formerly World Chess News) is a half-hour long TV-show about chess, aired weekly on local channels in Sweden and on the Internet, including right here at Chessville.  The ChessTV team consists of five siblings from Stockholm, Sweden, currently in the ages between 21 and 14.  Adriana, Antonia and Amelia Krzymowska (23-20) and Alfred and Albert Krzymowski (18 and 16) created the idea and concept of the show.

The Smith-Morra Gambit is a White response to the Sicilian Defense, and is characterized as early as White's 2nd move: 1.e4 c5 2.d4

The Smith-Morra Gambit is popular at club levels, and is played at least occasionally by even some masters.  If Black, after 2...cxd4 3.c3, accepts the gambit by taking the pawn on c3, White will play 4.Nxc3, gaining an early initiative and a dangerous attack.

While this gambit may not be entirely sound, it is dangerous in the hands of a player who knows the opening well, especially against an unprepared opponent.  This is an opening designed to give Black plenty of opportunities to go wrong!  Let's get the ball rolling on this episode of the opening School:
