Petrosian,T - Chauvenet,R Simultaneous Exhibition, Maryland, 1976 Annotations by Russell Chauvenet [Click here

Petrosian had just won the 1976 Lone Pine tournament in California before starting his exhibition tour. As I remember it, he looked rather grim and preoccupied, and rather tired towards the end of it all. I think when he resigned he gave me a perfunctory hand-shake; I didn't expect signs of enthusiasm and I didn't feel I had played especially well - I just took advantage of the situation. The game v Petrosian just shows that one of me is better than 1/55 of him. On March 25, 1976, Former World Champion Tigran Petrosian came to Maryland and gave a simultaneous on 55 boards. He faced a fair number of strong players and scored 37 wins, 12 draws, and 6 losses. Among the six exultant victors was Russell Chauvenet. Bearing in mind the physical and mental demands of such exhibitions, and that Petrosian was then 47 years old, here is the score. 1.d4 Nf6
7.Nf3 In 1969 MD Champ, I played 7.e4 as W and defeated Charles Powell. In 1992 Melody Amber, Seirawan also played 7.e4 vs Judit Polgar, expecting to win, but she eventually drew. 7...g6
17.Bxe7 Taking the bait; typical when you have 55 people to play at once. 17...Rfe8
35.Bxe8?! Better 35.Bxa4 35...Rxe8
44.Rxc3? Fatigue sets in. 44...Qe1+
