This position was presented at the extraordinarily fascinating site Tim Krabbé's Open Chess Diary as a Christmas Puzzle last year (2007).

Tim, on his website, writes, "A well-known grandmaster wrote: "There is simply no way that that position is legal - NO WAY" - but I would never send my readers on impossible missions and of course, when he sent me the position, Bader Al-Hajiri had already included his own proof game of 32,5 moves, or 65 ply."

Here is that solution (there are others!):
