Today's position was taken from issue #236 of Nuestro Círculo, un boletín semanal de ajedrez editado en Argentina en lenguaje español.

You don't have to speak Spanish to enjoy this position, from the great 14th-century Portuguese chessplayer Pedro Damiano:
 

White to mate in two

1.Qa7+ Kxa7
2.Ra6   matel
 









 

After we published this position, several readers, led by Rich Zuzzolo, wrote in to point out the mate-in-one, 1.Rxb8.  I checked my the source above, and the diagram above exactly duplicates that source diagram.  I can only assume the diagram is in error though, and Rich offers the following suggestion, "Put a Black queen on F4 or G3 and the puzzle makes perfect sense."  So I did, in the diagram below:








Now the mate makes much more sense!  Thanks for the suggestion Rich.

If any reader can confirm the original diagram, please let me know!
