A New York Chess Player
(Lessons From The Marshall Chess Club)
Chessville is proud to introduce Lawrence
S. Tamarkin (read his
Resume here) to our readers. Larry is a USCF Life Master,
and denizen of the famous Marshall Chess Club. Larry even has an
opening variation named after him -
The Tamarkin
Counter-Gambit in the Zilbermints Benoni (1.d4 c5 2.Nf3 cxd4 3.b4
e5). Be sure to see
Larry's column at jeremysilman.com, too.
Of himself Larry writes, "I first learned
how to play chess in summer camp in 1969 around the same time that men
landed on the moon (Which I saw outdoors with the other campers on
that hot July 19th!). |
|
I learned the
moves and some simple checkmates but had no real enthusiasm for the game
until the first Fischer-Spassky world championship match in 1972.
Like thousands of
other Americans I was entranced by this match and thought upon seeing the
13th game that the game did not look too complicated to master and so
mistakenly thought I could play just as well. However, unlike the vast
majority of people caught up in that match I kept playing chess up to the
present day.
While I have never
achieved any of the great successes of the best players of the country
today, I did make some progress becoming a chess master in 1985 and a
Life-Master in 1987. I also was the first player recognized for being the
most active U.S. player in 1983 with 495-rated games, about 140 games ahead
of the next placed person. I also elected during these years to devote
myself to making a living at chess by teaching, playing and directing and
finally writing about chess, all of which I have done with various levels of
success since 1985."
Enjoy Larry's
writings, in which he says "I comment on my ongoing attempt to improve my
game playing in the World renowned Marshall Chess Club's 4-rated games
tonight events."
