New Additions - Part Seven New quotes that we haven't even had time to categorize
yet! Civilization advances by extending the number of important operations, which we can perform without thinking about them. Operations of thought are like cavalry charges in a battle - they are strictly limited in number, they require fresh horses, and must only be made at decisive moments. – Alfred North Whitehead To be creative, to be adventurous, to exhibit flair, is no excuse for not studying hard. The truth is exactly the opposite. You have to work constantly at your game, at your openings and endings. A deep analysis is necessary. Chess is not a fixed or static body of knowledge. It's dynamic. Even the books I've written on chess and the annotations I've made on my own matches are not set in stone. I keep updating them. There must be a constant questioning of old ideas, even one's own. – Garry Kasparov I'm really an ordinary guy. I make mistakes. It kills me when I do. But I'm willing to talk about my mistakes in the analysis afterwards. I don't hide anything. I've always loved this game from childhood. I've loved studying chess. I've loved the life around chess - the new friends, the atmosphere, the struggle. – Garry Kasparov I always play carefully and try to avoid unnecessary risks. I consider my method to be right as any superfluous daring runs counter to the essential character of chess, which is not a gamble but a purely intellectual combat conducted in accordance with the exact rules of logic. – Jose Raul Capablanca Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and, above all, confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this something, at whatever cost, must be attained. – Marie Curie Little by little the pieces and squares began to come to life and exchange impressions. The crude might of the queen was transformed into refined power, restrained and directed by a system of sparkling levers; the pawns grew cleverer; the knights stepped forth with a Spanish caracole. Everything had acquired sense and at the same time everything was concealed. Every creator is a plotter; and all the pieces impersonating his ideas on the board were here as conspirators and sorcerers. Only in the final instant was their secret spectacularly exposed. – Vladimir Nabokov Chess is above all a game of skill. Its beauty and subtlety can only be fully understood by those who take the time to see - not only the clever moves that actually appear on the board but also the hidden ideas and threats which the players had to avoid. – Tim Harding So often, it is not a question of how much you know, but how well and consistently you apply what you do know. – Dan Heisman The reason they call it chess, is that all the four-letter words were taken. – Source Unknown This game is great because it teaches you responsibility. You only have yourself to blame if you lose the game. The same is true in life. If you want to win, you have to throw your blame book out the window and take responsibility for yourself. – Orrin Hudson All the answers are on the board. Just like in life, whatever you give out in this game is what you get back. – Orrin Hudson The most gifted members of the human species are at their creative best when they cannot have their way, and must compensate for what they miss by realizing and cultivating their capacities and talents. – Eric Hoffer It is often more important to emphasize the obvious, than to elucidate the obscure. – Oliver Wendell Holmes Even with a good position, a player, no matter how strong, cannot afford to relax his attention even for one move. – Jose R. Capablanca Chess is an obsession - you play or you don’t play; no half-measures. And, like gambling, you keep on playing even when you lose and lose and lose. – Sarah Hurst I know the price of success: dedication, hard work and an unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen. – Frank Lloyd Wright As a competitive chess player in my younger days, when I played a beautiful game, I wanted to frame it and put it on the wall. Chess is also a sport because it is incredibly mentally and physically demanding. That computers play it better does not lessen any of the enjoyment that we can get from the game. – Jonathan Schaeffer Playing is the harshest form of feedback because it’s the other person’s ideas directly against yours. Why do you make a move? Because you think it’s the best move on the board. When somebody else shows you that it’s not, well then you’ve learned something there - very quickly. – Mig Greengard The poorest chess player is more to be envied than the most favored servant of the Golden Calf; for the latter grovels all his life long in the mire of materialism; while the former dwells high aloft, in the bright realms of imagination and poetry. - Weiss Nature supplies the game of chess with its implements; science with its system; art with its aesthetic arrangement of its problems; and God endows it with its blessed power of making people happy. – Weiss
Let's face it, it's a difficult game and it consumes a lot of time. Perhaps
we shouldn't try too hard to market the game as a popular pursuit. Those who
love chess tend to love it deeply precisely because of its depth. Much of
the game's charm is lost if we simplify or dilute it, and this may not be a
price worth paying for making chess more popular. – Jonathan Rowson
