(8/31)  Review: three excellent puzzle books
Chess Vibes By Arne Moll
I don’t like games (except chess) and I hate puzzles.  I’m one of those people who doesn’t like to solve something others have solved before, let alone trying this in the presence of someone who already knows the answer.  I’m always afraid I won’t be able to find the solution and will have to conclude I’m a horrible chess player (or a quiz participant, or a student).  Still, I very much like reading chess puzzle books as long as I can look up the answer right away...

New England Nor'easters Game of the Week - The Nor’easters defeat the Baltimore Kingfishers.  In most sporting endeavours, expansion teams start with some sort of disadvantage.  New England shares the region with the highly successful Boston Blitz.  Boston has been a heavyweight team for years, despite the fact that they have yet to win a USCL championship.  Even though the expansion Nor'easters had to find suitable players in the backyard of the Blitz, the Boston area is well known for its strong and diverse chess talent, so it was not that difficult to find a number of interested competitors...

"Some observers predict that the progress of chess-playing computer software will ...cause the end of the Royal Game, by finally answering the question, “Is chess a win or a draw with best play – and for who?”.  While initial silicon efforts at pawn-pushing were amusing in their time, current titles can beat most people, and some programs can beat all players.  Against that background, consider Gary M. Chess.com by GM Julio_Becerra
Reuben Fine, born October 11, 1914, had a greater natural gift than Reshevsky; he is considered one of the most brilliant natural players in history.  He is the only player who has an overall positive score in his games with world champions!  But he retired early from chess, and remains one of the great might-have-beens in chess history.  His greatest triumph, AVRO 1938, was also practically the end of Fine’s international chess career!  During World War II he earned a doctorate and was too busy working in Washington to return to chess...

Richard Reti?  Nope.  Nikolay Grigoriev?  Try again.  Henri Rinck?  No, the following position, with only four pieces on the board is not from the torturous imagination of some study composer designed to have your mind standing upside down.  This position actually arose in the game between Georgiadis - Sandalakis, played in 2010 in an Open on Crete.  The player with White was faced with a delicate problem that had an elegant solution, worthy of a place in some endgame manual.  Can you find the narrow path to victory?  White to play and win...

The Guardian by Ronan Bennett & Daniel King
As attacking is our theme, that's the perfect excuse to feature a game by one of our favourite players, David Bronstein.  Bronstein was a true romantic, valuing artistry above results, always prepared to have a hack at his opponent's king.  This game is taken from our 2009 Book of the Year, The Sorcerer's Apprentice by David Bronstein & Tom Fürstenberg.  We could have selected any one of dozens of ingenious attacks, but this one has a strong similarity to the manoeuvre in last week's game – though played 50 years earlier...

Chessville by IM Igor Khmelnitsky
A new Chess Lesson of the Month.  "I'd like to show a very unusual variation of the very important tactical theme - Intermediate Move (also called In-between Move, Zwischenzug).  A typical Intermediate Move occurs when a Player A either captures a piece or a pawn, or creates a threat, but the player B, rather then addressing the issue, creates a counter-threat of at least an equal strength (often a check).  Only when the Player A addresses the threat, the player B deals with the original issue (either recaptures or defends)..."
