KNIGHTS OF THE SOUTH BRONX
is a heroic story of a man who came into a broken-down school, taught a group of aimless inner city children how to play chess, and took them out into the elitist world of championship chess competition.  David MacEnulty strenuously argued that chess was not just a game but a set of mind skills that would enable children to face challenges they would encounter in their lives. They not only learned the art of competition, but triumphed by beating private school teams across the entire country.

Emmy Award winner Ted Danson has enjoyed a career spanning television, film and the stage and is beloved for his portrayal of womanizing, recovering alcoholic barkeep Sam Malone in Cheers (1982-93) and as the crusty physician Becker (1998-2004),  His feature film credits include The Onion Field, Three Men and a Baby, Body Heat, Creepshow, Cousins, Made in America, Dad, Mumford and Saving Private Ryan.  Among his television films are Something About Amelia, When The Bough Breaks and Gulliver’s Travels.

Malcolm David Kelley is best known for portraying Walt on ABC’s Emmy Award winning LOST, and starring with Denzel Washington in the feature film Antwone Fisher. He also starred with Steve Harvey in You Got Served.  TV guest starring roles include Judging Amy, Malcolm in the Middle, For Your Love, Girlfriends, Party of Five, and Eve.

Appearing with Danson and Malcolm David Kelley will be Kate Vernon (Malcolm X), Brian Markinson (Angels in America), Clifton Powell (Ray) and Keke Palmer (Barbershop II: Back in Business).

Acclaimed filmmaker Allen Hughes’ landmark features include Menace II Society, Dead Presidents, From Hell starring Johnny Depp, all made in tandem with his twin brother Albert.  He has also co-directed music videos, produced movie soundtracks and is executive producer of the television series Touching Evil.

KNIGHTS OF THE SOUTH BRONX is directed by Allen Hughes. The executive producer is Diane Nabatoff.  Co-producer is Perri Peltz. Delia Fine serves as the executive producer for A&E Network and Emilio Nunez is the supervising producer. David Madden and Lisa Demberg will supervise for FtvS.

DAVID MacENULTY
(on whom Knights is based)

David MacEnulty has been teaching chess in New York City for the past fifteen years. Following a year of working as an instructor for the American Chess Foundation, he took on the task of teaching chess to children at a large elementary school in the southwest Bronx, Community Elementary School 70. In his third year, his students won first place team trophies at both the New York City and the New York State Chess Championships, a feat they duplicated every year for the next five. Competing frequently, his students won over two hundred trophies a year, and were consistently among the top five teams in the nation, winning three first place trophies at the national level, and placing second four times.

During the summers, David appears regularly at chess camps around the country. David is the author of three books for Random House, The Chess Kids Book of Tactics, The Chess Kids Book of the King and Pawn Endgame, and The Chess Kids Book of Checkmate. He also wrote six e-books (two in collaboration with Grandmaster Miron Sher) for the Official US Chess Federation Software, Think Like a King, and produced three videos of chess instruction, two featuring Bruce Pandolfini, Opening Principles and Understanding Chess, and a third, Chess for Children, showing the moves and rules, in which he appears as teacher. Currently, David is teaching at the Dalton School. He is still in contact with many of his former students, and he still does assist them from time to time when help is needed.
