September 17-28, 2007

Lithuanian IM Algimantis Butnorius in new Senior World Chess Champion!
Jude Acers Tops Among American Men

World famous, New Orleans chess master and author, Jude Acers, The Man in the Red Beret, and two-time Guinness Book of World Records holder for simultaneous chess play (117 opponents in 1973 and 179 opponents in 1976), was greeted at Armstrong International Airport by chess fans with red berets, American flags, balloons, and banners.  The youngest of the fans, Royden and Gwen Lynch's beautiful children, are pictured below with Acers.

Acers scored an impressive 7 out of 11 points with 5 wins and 4 draws, achieving a performance rating of 2289.  There were 233 players from 41 countries, many being Grand Masters, FIDE Masters, and National Masters.  Men age 60 and over were eligible to compete.

The overall winner, and new Senior World Chess Champion, was Lithuanian IM Algimantis Butnorius, with 9/11.  Three GMs tied for 2nd, at 8.5/11.  Jude's finish (tied for 26th) was better than the next-best American, GM Anatoly Lein, who scored 6.5/11 to finish tied for 44th-63rd.

Acers began playing chess at age 7 and earned the title chess master at age 17.  He has played, taught, and promoted chess over the last 40 years by giving more than 1000 chess lectures and exhibitions in 48 states and five (5) countries at schools, colleges, state fairs, and prisons.

New Orleans Chess Icon!  Jude Acers has been seen by millions of motorists, tourists, and passersby at his World Chess Table, “Gazebo” Sidewalk Terrace on Decatur Street in the French Quarter promoting the King of Games for OVER 30 years!!

Many worldwide were concerned about Acers after Hurricane Katrina since his “office” is located “on the street!”  However, his spirit and determination has always made him a winner!
