The Man in the Red Beret
Chess Lecture and
Simultaneous Exhibition

Metairie Park Country Day School
Metairie, Louisiana
Sunday, September 10, 2006 1:00 p.m.

As the chess coach at Metairie Park Country Day (MPCD) School in Metairie, Louisiana, I was thrilled when Mr. Acers agreed to perform one of his world famous simultaneous chess exhibitions for our club.  He was gracious and professional, and we sincerely appreciated his performance.  It was truly "An Event for the Entire Family!"  -  Thank you, Marilyn Pelias, MD

In addition to the exhibition, The Man in the Red Beret recommended "The Immortal Classics," Logical Chess Move by Move by Irving Chernev and Chess Secrets I Learned From the Masters by Edward Lasker.

The children gathered at Mr. Acers' feet and listened attentively as he reviewed the game A. Schotlander versus 9-year-old Edward Lasker, Berlin, 1890 on the demonstration board.

Marsha Biguenet, MPCD’s Lower School Principal stated, "The event was stimulating, engaging and fun.  I encourage activities that intellectually stimulate the pursuit of learning, especially for the young!"

Saturday, March 12th 2005, at Nunez Community College in Chalmette, Louisiana

The St. Bernard Chess League sponsored its second annual chess lecture and simultaneous chess exhibition on Saturday, March 12, 2005, at Nunez Community College in Chalmette, Louisiana.  World famous New Orleans chess master and author, Jude Acers, “The Man in the Red Beret,” was the guest of honor.  Mr. Acers has made more than 1,000 chess appearances in 48 states and five countries.

He began with a chess lecture, gave chess tips on improving one’s game, and recommended several chess books for various levels of play.  Afterwards, Mr. Acers gave a demonstration of one of his favorite games.  “The Man in the Red Beret” then proceeded to play 20 area K-12 students simultaneously.  He holds two world records for simultaneous chess, playing 117 opponents (1973) and 179 opponents (1976) at once and is certified by the Guinness Book of World Records.

The event began promptly at 1:00 p.m. and lasted two hours.  The Last Man Standing was TYLER HESTON, age 9, a fourth grader at Lacoste Elementary School in Chalmette.  Many other area students attended, including six players from the chess team at W. Smith, Jr. Elementary School in Violet under the direction of PATRICK D. OTERO.  Afterwards, the students inundated Mr. Acers for autographs and pictures.  Jude says, "Entire appearance was an absolute blast...Place  absolutely rocked."

"The following statement is on the home page of the St. Bernard Chess League's web page.  I added this because I have seen the positive results of chess on my son, Drew!  Experts have been quoted as saying, "Chess improves one’s concentration, sportsmanship, logic, attention span, memory and problem solving. Additionally, chess teachers say the game is effective in teaching patience. Chess forces players to sit down and plan what they are going to do and then carry the plan out. Players learn what it means to fail and succeed, which is a part of life. In addition, as in life, one must follow rules--so as in the game of chess. Chess has also been a tool used with students who have been diagnosed with aggressive and ADHD behaviors."  - Lynn Irby
