A Day in the Life of A Chess Journalist
© Darren Dillinger

Our day starts at the chess club, with a friendly game.

Guess what Pete!  Remember that former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Lennox Lewis guy, who had his chess article submitted for the Chess Journalists of America awards contest?  Well he is doing real well; CHESS magazine just came out with a cover feature article on him.  And the Los Angeles Times gave him some good coverage in their June 29, 2006 edition.*

Yeah, I was the chief judge this year. One of his articles was submitted, but I did not have it turned over to the judges in that category.  Lewis probably does not know about that.

Well, I gotta get online to play in an Internet tournament, see you next week George.

Okay, the parings are being posted for the chess tournament; I am in the mood for a tough fight today!

Wait a minute -- I am being paired this round with Lennox Lewis!

Uhhh Pete, you don’t think he has found about you not passing on his article to the judges do you?

I hope not . . . I know our CJA President would never tell!  Let’s see how Lewis handles the Marshall Attack!

Looks like Lewis found out!  Oh by the way, he got CJA President Hanken early this morning!

The above cartoon was inspired by the true story of a Lennox Lewis article being submitted in April of this year, for the annual national awards of the Chess Journalists of America.  But that the top people at the CJA did not forward it to the judges in the category to be considered.

Also strange, is that the CJA President says he knows why this happened, but refuses to answer any questions about it.  Even questions from some fellow officers. . . Really strange!

This excellent article on former World Heavy Weight Boxing Champion, Lennox Lewis surprises me as to what an impact Lewis has had on chess in both his native England and here in the United States.

Lewis came back to the US to visit the school chess program in Memphis that he has been helping out for over four years ( over $20,000 in money and also a couple of appearances over the years.) The school team he worked with did win the USCF National championship.

This article which appeared in the June 29 L.A. Times, was triggered by his visit back to Memphis June 22nd, 2006. Again he touched base with their Scholastic chess program.

Rated players have told me that Lewis appears to be of USCF Class ‘A’ playing strength.

I was so impressed -- I intend to submit the L.A. Times piece this coming year in our annual CJA awards.

Daren Dillinger, Vice-President
Chess Journalist of America.
