Reader Ty Kroll writes:

I've been collecting for a while now, connected to a fine community of chess collectors online, and no matter who I talk to, there are two sets in my collection I can find no one who has ever seen before.  Both are small 'oddball' sets which I find incredibly charming.  It's possible they are not terribly uncommon, just not high end, so they fly "under the radar" of many collectors.  Neither cost me anything significant, but they're among my favorites.  I'd love to know more about them if anyone anywhere has seen anything like them.

First there is a little tagua / vegetable ivory set that came to me in a cigar box.

Hand writing on the box reads: "Spinx Chensis Tongue Out !Careful!" and "Chess Men Ivory Nut From Bud Remmy 1/1/41"

The form of the pieces appears to be French, close to the Regence form, but that's all anyone has been able to tell me.

These pics and this information have been up on my website for quite a while and no one has offered any further information.
