Chess News North America

Recent reports on USCF’s finances both suggest that the move to Crossville, TN may come in under-budget, but that also it may have unpaid vendors elsewhere. Neither financial detail can be verified since both the budget and payables is currently board-only information.

Chess Around the World

British GM murdered.  The Times [London] reports ‘GM Simon Webb (best known for correspondence play & for his book "Chess for Tigers") was stabbed to death a week ago, apparently by his son.”  Simon Webb was 55 years old, and the event took place in Sweden.  Webb was one of only about 50 grand masters of correspondence chess and was once ranked seventh in the world.  He is remembered to have been a very kind and gentle man, but also a true tiger at the chess board.

FISCHER DRAMA

REYKJAVIK (Reuters) - Iceland's parliament granted former world chess champion Bobby Fischer citizenship Monday, enabling the fugitive American to settle in the tiny North Atlantic republic where he won the world title in 1972.

BUT WASHINGTON —  The United States demanded Tuesday that Japan hand over Bobby Fischer despite Iceland's move to accept the chess legend currently detained by Japanese immigration authorities since last July.

THEN an announcement that Fischer would be released at Midnight 23 March

AND Mainichi Daily News: The United States is "disappointed" Iceland has granted Bobby Fischer citizenship, but still wants to bring him to trial in his homeland, a U.S. Embassy in Tokyo spokesman told the Mainichi Daily News on Wednesday 3/23/05.  Press Attache Michael J. Boyle said the U.S. position on Fischer remained unchanged even if the Grand Master had been granted Icelandic citizenship, and continued, “Mr. Fischer is a fugitive from justice in the United States. There is a federal warrant for his arrest for violating sanctions against the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.”

SO Reykjavik: says that the statute of limitations for prosecuting Fischer over the 1992 U.S. grand jury has expired in Iceland.  At a press conference on arrival in Iceland Fischer declared that he was “finished with the corrupt chess world.”

Nikita Vitiugov 2478).

The opening ceremony and sortition will take place 16th March at 6 p.m. Moscow time (+3 GMT) in the city chess club.  The rounds start at 3 p.m. Moscow time (+3 GMT), except the games where Astashov plays, these games start at 4 p.m.  The Saint-Petersburg Company Shahcom provides live coverage of games in the playing hall and at website www.ruschess.co

(New Windsor)  The U.S. Chess Federation (USCF) announces the appointment of Jerry Nash as the new Scholastic Director.  Nash served as a chess tournament director and a chess coach in Calcasieu Parish schools from 1996-2005.  He also served as Scholastic Coordinator for the Louisiana State Chess Association between 2003-2005. The USCF currently has over 45,000 members under the age of 19.

Garry Kasparov wrote a long article in the Wall Street Journal dated 14 March 2005, offering detailed reasons for his retirement and also speaking of his future activities in politics and in chess.

Fischer Returns?  Saturday 19th March 2005:  "Iceland has just got its tenth grandmaster – Robert James Fischer," rejoiced the RJF Committee.  The country's parliament decided unanimously a few hours ago to grant Fischer Icelandic citizenship.  Japanese authorities have confirmed that in such a case they would release the detained former world champion.  A delegation will escort Fischer back to Iceland ‘sometime later this week.’

Political pressure has been steadily rising, from the Icelandic Parliament, the international community acting with the RJF Committee, but also by numerous questions within the Japanese Parliament.  A very terse message to the US Ambassador was written by Gardar Sverrisson, a political scientist, and was published in the Icelandic daily Morgunbladid.  It is to be noted that Iceland has an extradition treaty with the USA.  Read all about it in the Fischer Freedom Watch.

The 78th Championship of Saint-Petersburg takes place 17-27 March in the city chess club devoted to Mikhail Chigorin.  The tournament gathered a very strong membership: between 12 participants there are 7 GMs (Sergey Ivanov 2574, Vasily Yemelin 2555, Denis Yevseev 2550, Sergey Ionov 2527, Valerij Popov 2588, Aleksei Lugovoi 2552 and Valery Loginov 2507), 2 IMs (Sergey Klimov 2509 and Sergey Solovjov 2456) and 1 master of Russia 18 y.o. Icelandic Saga?

Another nutty week of Fischer reports include the continued solitary confinement of Fischer in Japan; Fischer grabbing a guard over an egg dispute, and US authorities suggesting that he is wanted for ‘money laundering’, according to AP sources – who scoff at the idea that Fischer’s attorney’s have also received ‘money-laundered’ funds. No named US authorities seem willing to go on the record in interviews with the press.

Meanwhile Larry Evans remembers Fischer, in an article at http://www.newsreview.com/issues/reno/2005-03-10/arts.asp

He also remembers Marcel Duchamp and Stanley Kubrick.

Masako Suzuki, Bobby Fischer's lawyer, received today a formal negative answer from the Immigration Office of Japan's Ministry of Justice, that RJF´s request for voluntary departure on the bases of his new Icelandic Alien Passport was declined.  However she learned through unofficial means that Bobby would be released right away if he would be granted an Icelandic citizenship.  More breaking news available on the Fischer Freedom Watch page, including pictures of his Icelandic passport.

Meanwhile… The Super-Tournament at Linares  took place from 23rd February to the 10th of March. The participants:-

Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, Veselin Topalov, Peter Leko, Michael Adams, Francisco Vallejo Pons and Rustam Kasimdzhanov.

At the end of round 12 Garry Kasparov was 1.5 points clear of the field, with two rounds to go. Kasparov has 3 games won with the black pieces, and no other player has achieved a win with the black pieces for 12 rounds except Anand. In the final round Adams also achieved this distinction by beating Anand.

And Surprise, Surprise! Topalov caught up and drew equal on points over the last two rounds to be equal first on points, but Kasparov won first place based on new rules this year on games won with black.

Final Standings:
1 Kasparov 8.0 / 12
2 Topalov 8.0
3 Anand 6.5
4 Leko 6.0
5 Adams 5.5
7 Vallejo Pons 4.0
7 Kasimdzhanov 4.0

And more Surprises: At the end of the tournament Kasparov announced in an often tearful press conference that he will retire from further serious play!

The Chess world is all agog with this announcement, mostly celebrating the career of perhaps the strongest player ever, but also looking forward to which players will now occupy this space at the top.

Icelandic Saga?

Can we see Fischer?  No!

"The reason they gave was also very strange," said Palsson, a smiling, gray-haired, 68-year-old former police officer said. "I never thought I looked so violent."  Immigration Bureau officials strongly denied that Palsson and Fischer's fiancée Miyoko Watai had been turned away because they were accompanied by reporters from the Mainichi and a television crew from Iceland…

The latest news is that while the Icelandic embassy in Tokyo holds
Fischer's Icelandic passport, the Japanese authorities have cut off all of his contacts with the outside world, including with lawyers, the media, and visitors. Two days ago they also prevented him meeting with Icelandic officials.  Another report says that Fischer has lost a lot of weight and is now ‘very thin.’

Chess Queens in the Big Apple:  On Tuesday, March 1, two women, Grandmaster Zhu Chen, 27, the ninth Women's World Chess Champion from China, and International Master Irina Krush, 21, a rising American star, played for the Accoona World Chess Championship in ABC's Times Square Studios at 46th Street and Broadway.  Result: Chen 1.5, Krush 0.5.

Chess Around the World

Its all about SPAIN!  First FIDE has announced that it will boycott Spain from future Fide events because of activities there at the last Olympiad, where a senior Fide official appears to have engaged in fisticuffs, and a bit of headbutting.  USCF are unlikely to boycott FIDE as an act of solidarity with the Spanish, one of the strongest chess countries in the world.  Perhaps they will restrict themselves to sending a memo?  But that’s enough about chess politics...

Nothing happened in chess this week in the USA. Except that 5 times US Champion GM Larry Evans told a previous Chess Life editor, Larry Parr: “GM Evans told me he was interviewed recently by Japan TV (the BBC of Asia) for a new documentary they are making about Bobby [Fischer].”

Fischer has now spent 9 months in a Japanese prison, and it is unclear what basis there is for holding him from either Japanese or American Government sources, or of a potential future as an Icelandic citizen.

FIDE world championship in Ho Chi Minh City?

14.02.2005 The Vietnam News Agency, Vietnamnet, is reporting that the 2005 World Chess Championship will be held at the end of the year in Ho Chi Minh City.  "The National Committee for Sports and Physical Training and the HCMC People's Committee are organizing the event," writes the agency.

Meanwhile the Fide President has made his own request; “As I have repeated several times, FIDE is the organizing structure, it looks for the sponsors.  This is not so simple to do.  We have requested all participants of the process to abstain from comments.”
And seemed to be talking about a very different location in the world to host the event: “we have a letter from the Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of Turkey, where he declares that his country is ready to organize the match.”

The Fide President also admitted a qualification to his statement, after being pressed by his interviewer: I confess I was under the impression that the Turkish Organizers raised the money only for the case that Kasparov would participate.

”Kasparov of course is a cult figure in chess, but the Government of Turkey was giving money for the World Championship,” replied Kirsan.

The “Cult figure” recently decided not to negotiate further with Fide on world championship unification, and to return his attention to chess activities. We should observe his next major participation at Linares.

The term ‘Mickey Mouse Championship’ is currently being used by GMs to describe this ‘interesting’ process.

The Madras High Court has, in an interim injunction, restrained P T Ummer Koya and Sowmen Majumdar from acting as Secretary and Treasurer of the All India Chess Federation (AICF).

What’s on The Parrot’s horizon?   The Polgar – Nakamura match should be an interesting encounter.  After all, Susan Polgar wrote this month that "In my opinion, Hikaru is the most talented American player since Bobby Fischer."

USCF’s list of rated chess players has apparently been used by the military for recruitment purposes to Junior players. USCF officials are unable to account for this event, or provide assurances to a list of questions about their list management policy and practice. A vice President of USCF even wrote that only members could ask questions on this issue. He provided none himself, not for you Mom! nor the lonesome Parrot.

Jailed chess player Bobby Fischer suffered a damaging blow in his quest for freedom Wednesday morning after Justice Ministry lawyers told the Tokyo District Court they had no intention of letting him leave Japan for Iceland. Tsuyoshi Satake, lawyer for the Ministry of Justice, said the ministry wanted to continue the lawsuit in its current form, which requires Fischer be deported to the United States.

Gary Kasparov is cheesed off with Fide’s chess non-arrangements.  “I called a halt to negotiations last night.” said the Grandmaster, in an article published at http://www.chessbase.com/.  Kasparov concluded his comments with:

“As for unification, I cannot see an avenue to contribute further. For those who saw me as an obstacle, I will be one no longer. I am not giving up on chess. I will compete as well and as long as I am able to play my brand of chess. I will continue to serve chess and those who love our game. I have now held the #1 ranking for 20 years and I will defend my position against any opponent. My only retreat is from the battlefield of chess championship politics."
