The New
York Times reports that The IOC this week sent out a 33-point
questionnaire to all 28 Olympic sports federations. The form also
went to golf, rugby, squash, karate and roller sports, which are among
the 28 ``recognized'' federations not on the Olympic program. The
move rules out Olympic status for hopefuls such as bowling, water
skiing, billiards, ballroom dancing, chess, bridge and surfing. |
 |
The NY Times also reported: RUSSIA: PROTEST AGAINST REGIONAL
LEADER The police in the southern Russian republic Kalmykia broke
up a protest by thousands of people in the capital, Elista, calling for
the resignation of Kalmykia's president, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
Television and news agencies reported that 89 people were arrested and
several injured. Mr. Ilyumzhinov, who is also president of
the World Chess Federation, has governed the impoverished region
since 1993, using methods that his critics say are authoritarian, says
NY Times reporter Steven Lee Myers. |

R. J. Fischer remains in Japanese custody.
He was withheld at Narita Airport in Tokyo while attempting to enter the
country. According to
Miss Watai, Secretary of the Japan Chess
Association. Fischer’s passport had been revoked in late 2003, and the
Japanese authorities had been informed, but apparently not RJF himself.
Should Fischer be extradited to the US to face trial, The Parrot
suggests introducing honorable Boris Spassky as a character witness. Of
course, Spassky was part of the
1992 match
in
Yugoslavia that initiated Fischer’s
fall-out with US authorities, so the irony of such a legal move would be
thick enough to cut with a blunt knife. |

July 17:
An announcement for a Drug-Testing Swiss, 3-SS, G/40 in
Allentown, PA has vanished from the Allentown CC website. Unknown is
if The Parrot’s announcement to 75,000 chess players has
had an effect. |

Grandmaster Arnold Denker was 90 years old last week, and still actively
writing in chess groups. There can be few players these days who
remember Alekhine, and GM Denker was foremost in attempting to reinstate
him to chess in 1946. |

GM Susan Polgar speaks out on chess politics in the US, along with many
other topics in
20 Questions with
Susan Polgar. "In addition, when the AF4C decided not
to hold the U.S. Championship in 2004 which is supposed to be the
official qualifying event for a spot on the team, things turned ugly.
Instead of going into details, all I can say is too many people made
decisions based on their political future, personal gain and ego rather
than for the good of
U.S. Chess." |
 |
"My Dear Parrot, get the politicians out of chess power-hooray!! Well
done. I totally support Susan in this aim. I have been fighting
this battle for 19 years-its great to have her now say the same." -Ray
Keene, IGM |

Last 2 in Libya.
Blunderful Game 6 ends as a draw, and
now both players have 3 points. Perhaps when the time control is set
even faster we will see even more ‘exciting’ games, where both
gladiators are reduced to a coffee-house brawl after having successfully
beaten 126 others players by more respectable means. |
 |
And this is exactly what happened in the two Rapid play-off games, where
Rustam Kasimdzhanov became the FIDE World Chess Champion beating
Michael Adams, 1½-½. Next up: Kasparov - IF the money can be found
for such a match. |

“And
they're closing all the factories down …”
Billy Joel
painted a grim picture of working-class life in Allentown, PA.
Now there is exciting news on the chess-front from the same place,
namely an announcement for a Drug-Testing Swiss, 3-SS, G/40 to be
held on July 17. The invitation says: “All players must pass a drug
"test" prior to round 1 (it's easy!)" EF:$5, Prizes: $20 gift
certificate by win lottery (If 20 or more players -- then 2 sections/2
prize funds).” The organizer further comments: ‘We proudly believe
this is the first USCF-rated Swiss to require a drug "test" by all
players’, and adds: ‘I can't decide whether to give a "test" or
have them toss a "P" in a cup’. |

The ethnically cleansed FIDE World Championship tournament in Tripoli,
Libya is nearing its end, with only two men left standing - Adams
and Kasimdzhanov. Are the finalists fighting to enter the
annals of chess history as the 17th World Champion (zigzag
line descendants of Steinitz) or is the prize more mundane:
qualification for a match with Kasparov later this year with prospects
of a seldomly big payday? |
 |
Man-of-the-moment is Uzbek Grandmaster Rustam Kasimdzhanov, who
toppled Topalov in the semi-final to end Bulgarian dreams of
simultaneously holding both the male and female World Champions.
Kasimdzhanov seems almost as unstoppable as Topalov did one week ago,
and has taken the lead 1½ - ½ after two games in the six –games final
(don’t blink!). |
 |
GM Vadim Milov has contacted Susan Polgar for assistance with his
lawsuit against FIDE. She agreed to help. USCF has been asked
if they will support the lawsuit. Morten Sand has made a response on
behalf of Fide deprecating the chance of the suit being successful in a
court of law. |

The highly controversial FIDE World Chess
Championship 18th June - 13th July, is taking place in Tripoli
Libya. Internet site:
wcc2004.fide.com. The de-facto exclusion of Jewish
players from the tournament has excited strong world-wide opinion in
chess circles.
GM Vadim Milov intends a lawsuit, “I was excluded from this
tournament only because of my possession of the Israeli passport.”
Some news reports say Israel will sue Libya. |

Under Pressure Fide President and
President of Kalmyk autonomous republic
Kirsan Ilyumdzhinov is telling
the Kremlin that if Moscow
dismisses him, there will be a second Chechnya in Kalmykia. |
 |
21 people are believed to have joined the
hunger-strike in the Kalmyk
republic. "When you participants of the chess championship are enjoying
yourselves with the concerts of the poverty-stricken performers and
dinners in expensive restaurants, the majority of children in Kalmykia
have not enough food. Poor Kalmykia cannot be donor and money-bag for
FIDE!" |
