News & Notes 13
By ICCF GM Yoav Dothan

I will be happy to get comments or analyzed games – you can e-mail them directly to me.

Here are some notes on the LXXI Spanish Championship-  Leon Spain.

(1) Vallejo Pons,F (2674) - Herraiz Hidalgo,H (2493) [A80]
LXXI ch-ESP GpA Leon ESP (1), 22.11.2006

After 28 moves the game reached:

Now White has to play 29.Rxe8 Qxe8 30.Qe2 Rf7 and keep a slight advantage, but instead...

29.Rc7  and now 29...Rxg3+ 30.hxg3 Qxc7 should be enough to win.

Analysis Diagram: after 30...Qxc7

Instead Black played   29...Qa6 30.Qe2  Here Black should play 30...Rf5 31.b3 Kg8 32.bxc4 dxc4 33.Qxc4 Qxc4 with chances to draw the game.  30...Rff8  31.Be5 Rg8 32.Qf3 h5 33.Qf6  and the mate is near. 1–0

(2) Del Rio Angelis,S (2492) - Garcia Castro,P (2390) [C41]
LXXI ch-ESP GpA Leon ESP (1), 22.11.2006

After 34 moves the game reached the following position:

Black should play 34...Kf6 35.Rc5 Nxe4 36.Rc7 Kg7 and draw should be the result but...

34...Re8?? 35.Rxd6 1–0

(3) Rivas Pastor,M (2511) - Herraiz Hidalgo,H (2493) [A26]
LXXI ch-ESP GpA Leon ESP (3), 24.11.2006

Now Black can decide the game by playing 21...Qe7 22.Qe1 Qc5+ 23.Be3 Qxe3+ 24.Qxe3 Nxe3 25.Rxd8 Rxd8 26.Rc1 Nxg2 27.Kxg2 Rd2+ and after exchanging the bishop at c3 the ending is won.

Analysis Diagram: after 29...Rxa2

21...Qd4+ 22.Qxd4 Bxd4+ 23.Rxd4 Rxd4 24.Bc1 Rxf1+ 25.Kxf1 Rd3 26.Nge4 Ne3+ 27.Bxe3 Rxe3 28.Nd5 Rd3 29.Ke2 Rd4 30.Ke3 c6 31.Ndf6 Rd8 32.Bh3 Nd4 33.Nc5 b6 34.Ncd7 c5 35.Ke4 Nc6 36.Kd5 Nb8 37.Kd6 Nxd7

Now 38.Bxd7 is much better and after Kg7 39.Ke7 would enable White to draw the game.

38.Nxd7 Re8 39.Be6 Kg7 40.a4 h5 41.a5 h4 42.Bd5 g5 43.axb6 axb6 44.Nxb6 g4 45.b4 cxb4 46.c5 b3 47.Bxb3 g3 0–1

(4) Garcia Castro,P (2390) - Narciso Dublan,M (2511) [B29]
LXXI ch-ESP GpA Leon ESP (3), 24.11.2006

White should draw the game with:  51.Nxc4 Bd5 (51...e3 52.Nxe3 fxe3 53.Kxe3 R1b2 and also draws) 52.b4 Ra8 53.g3 e3+ 54.Nxe3 fxe3+ 55.Kxe3

51.Ng4+ Bxg4 52.hxg4 R8xb2  Even better is 52...e3+ 53.Kf3 Rf1+ 54.Ke4 Re8+ 55.Kd4 Rd8+ 56.Ke4 Rd2 and wins nicely.  53.Rxb2 Rxb2+ 54.Kf1 Kg5 55.Rxc4 e3 56.Rc8 Kh4 57.g5 Rf2+ 58.Ke1 Rxg2 59.Re8 Kg3 60.g6 Kf3 61.Kd1 Rxg6 0–1

(5) Vallejo Pons,F (2674) - Garcia Castro,P (2390) [A55]
LXXI ch-ESP GpA Leon ESP (4), 25.11.2006

Black is already in a very bad position, and White could win at once, just by changing the order of the next two moves: 31.Bxe5+ Rxe5 32.exd5 Qc7 33.Qg6+ Kh8 34.Qh5+ Qh7 35.Rh6 wins.

31.exd5 Nf7 32.Qg6+ Kf8 33.dxc6 bxc6 34.Rf6 Rd8 35.Bxc4 Rd1+ 36.Kh2 Qa7 37.Qh6+ Ke8 38.Bxf7+ Rxf7 39.Qh8+ 1–0

(6) Arizmendi Martinez,J (2540) - Gomez Esteban,J (2486) [B12]
LXXI ch-ESP GpB Leon ESP (1), 22.11.2006

Here Black could play 31...Bxf5 32.Qxf5 Rg5 33.Qf4 h3 34.Kh1 Rfg8 35.Rg1 Rxg1+ 36.Rxg1 Rxg1+ 37.Kxg1 Qxe6 with a large advantage.

31... Re8  32.Re3 Bxf5 33.Qxf5 Rg3 34.Re2  White should play 34.Rff3 Rxf3 35.Qxf3 Qd6+ 36.Kh3 Rxe6 37.Rxe6 Qxe6+ 38.Kxh4.  34...Qg7 35.Qf4 Rg8 36.Ree1 0–1

And as the mate is unavoidable, White resigns36...Rh3+ 37.Kxh3 Qg2+ 38.Kxh4 Rh8+ 39.Qh6 Rxh6#

(7) Lopez Martinez,J (2508) - Fernandez Garcia,JoseL (2470) [C92]
LXXI ch-ESP GpB Leon ESP (2), 23.11.2006

Black can draw the game by playing: 70...Na6+ 71.Ka5 Nc7 72.Bd1 Ne6 73.Bg1 f5 74.Be3 f4 75.Ba7 Nc5 76.Be2 Nxb3+

70...Nxb3 71.Bxb5+ Kb6  And now another mistake.  71...Kb7 72.Bg1 f5 73.Be3 f4 74.Bxf4 Nd4 75.Bd3 Kc8 76.Bg3 Nf5 77.Bf2 Kd7.  72.Bg1+ Kc7 73.Be3 Kd6 74.Ba4 1–0

(8) Arizmendi Martinez,J (2540) - Lopez Martinez,J (2508) [C91]
LXXI ch-ESP GpB Leon ESP (3), 24.11.2006

Black can play now  50...Qxe2 51.Nxe2 Ra8 52.Nc3 Ra3 53.Nb5 Ra2 54.Rb8+ Kh7 55.Kh3 Rxf2 56.Nc7 Re2 and the result will be a probable draw.

50...Ra8??  51.Rb2??  Hard to believe; 51.Qxh5 wins at once.  51...Ra4?? 52.Rc2  Again!  52...g6  Finally the queen is protected.  ½–½
