This article deals with an endgame that should be drawn, but seven examples from the last two months prove that it is more problematic. All the examples are from top level chess - GM playing! Here are the basics for a K+R VS K+R+B endgame: Since the days of Philidor this endgame was analysed and today, with the tablebases to help us, it should be drawn except in very special positions, where the last pieces were exchanged and the king is on the border and soon mated. The difficulty with the endgame is with the complicated variations that arise. I advise all to study these seven examples, and there are many more! In my database there are 652 (!) examples of players who failed to get this half-point that they could get, not knowing how to handle this endgame. By the way – this endgame occurs more frequently then the K+R VS K+R+N endgame : I have only 139 examples, and only two of them occurred in the last two months. (Maybe an idea for a future column…)
